FORMULA 72

Formula 72

Rust Inhibitor

When blasting steel or iron, flash-rust forms very quickly due to environmental conditions. Oxidation occurs when salts from chlorides and water react with the substrate. The speed of this formation is based on the amount of chlorides present, which then react with the oxygen to form a “powdery” surface. When this happens the surface is not prepared to receive a coating, and adhesion failure will occur. This phenomena occurs in dry blasting, but it is more pronounced in wet blasting due to the increase in chlorides. When using well water the speed is greater still, due to the increased amount of chlorides. Dry blasting will also created flash rust, although the visual appearance may take longer. Microscopic flash rust is not readily apparent to the naked eye, and it can occur from minutes to hours after blasting, depending on the environment.

NOTE: Steel surfaces will increase in temperature due to the rate of blasting with dry or soda methods. The higher the rate, the higher the temperature, therefore the speed of rust formation increases proportionately. Rinse down areas periodically with a solution of Formula 72 to cool and treat the surface. Wet blasting does not incur increased heat to the surfaces due to the water and compressed air expansion. The addition of Formula 72 to the water will treat the surface while you are blasting.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Formula 72 is a specially formulated corrosion inhibitor designed to stop flash rusting on the surfaces of carbon steel and ductile cast iron.

When applied immediately after coating or rust removal, Formula 72 prevents rust for at least 72 hours, and is especially effective after washing equipment and parts with caustic materials.

This product improves coating adhesion and enhances paint performance, all in a non-toxic, biodegradable solution.

USES AND DIRECTIONS

Use Formula 72 on carbon steel and ductless cast iron (DCI) for maximum performance when used in conventional or dustless blasting operations, machining, paint stripping, or any mechanical scarifying process.

Dilute 1 part Formula 72 to 100 parts water. Materials to be treated can be immersed and/or sprayed down, and then allowed to air-dry. Product can also be applied during dustless blasting in the water/media hopper, at the same dilution ratio.
